Food Stamp Program

What is the Food Stamp Program?
The Food Stamp Program is a nutrition assistance program in which eligible low-income households can purchase food at participating grocery stores with the use of Electronic Benefit Transfer cards that look like a credit card or bank debit card. At the Federal level, the program is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. In California, the Food Stamp Program is supervised at the state level by the California Department of Social Services and is administered at the local level by each County Welfare Department.

Effective October 1, 2008, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the new name for the federal Food Stamp program. Although SNAP will be the national name, states may use a different name. California is currently working with community organizations and other stakeholders to develop a new name for the program. The new name reflects a focus on nutrition and putting healthy food within reach for low income households.

What does the name change mean for me - a food stamp recipient? Only the name of the Food Stamp program is changing. SNAP is not a new program. The name change will have no effect on current benefits. Recipients will continue to receive benefits as before and access them with the same electronic card at local authorized retailers and farmers markets.
